Dental implants are a titanium post screwed into the jaw bone. A prosthesis (crown, bridge or denture) is placed on the implant(s) to replace the missing tooth or teeth. Implant Surgery is usually two stage surgery.
Dental implants can be used to:
- replace a tooth or teeth with a fixed restoration
- avoid damaging adjacent teeth to replace a missing tooth/teeth
- stabilise a denture
A/Prof Sherring can carry out simple implant surgery under local anaesthetic in our Miranda Rooms. More complex surgery which may involve bone grafting or more than one implant is usually carried out under a general anaesthetic in hospital.
Your dentist or prosthodontist will construct, place and restore the prostheses (crown).
